-- Quote of the Day --

“…It takes quite some time to write the book… and over time as you get more feedback you start seeing what you need to do with the book. …When we start out, we are very nervous of putting our work out… and it stings to get comments or rejections, but you learn to have a thick hide – you must have as an author. I learned to listen – my way was not always the right way… and I started going to writer’s courses. …it is hard for a lot of people, me included, to keep getting rejection but in time you learn to accept it and you keep going…”

There are a number of cafes, restaurants, and schools that are coming up with innovative ways to decrease their impact on the environment simply through their purchasing choices. Recently the Live-Smart BC program highlighted a local cafe (Jogas; Grand Forks, BC) for their choice of biodegradable to-go containers made from organic materials. This topic has me recalling an article I read earlier in 2008 that explained the excitement over the UBC (university) There are plenty of organic materials for companies to choose from; materials range from grain hulls and coconut fiber to bamboo and corn starch,( among other sources) are currently being experiemented with. Styrofoam and plastic, two of the principal sources of waste in the ocean and other water-ways can be virtually eliminated if every community required the use of these alternatives. This next bit of information I'm going to share with you today comes directly from a message I received from the Zero Waste San Diego Group:

“From the shuttles fueled with hydrogen to dinner plates made from sugarcane, the 10 theme parks owned by Busch Entertainment Corp. of Orlando Florida ...are launching initiatives to tackle some of the most pressing environmental challenges in waste, food and fuel. All of the seafood served to guests, even the salmon fed to the Shamu the Whale, is now purchased from sustainably managed fisheries that promote the environmentally responsible stewardship. The environmental revamp extends to the parts' food utensils and plates. While these items have the look and feel of plastic, they are actually made from renewable sources such as sugarcane and vegetable starch. The company worked for more than a year to find eco-products that could meet the volume needs of the parks, which serves millions of guests each year, while staying in tact under the rigors of microwaves and freezers.”
