Bucket Filling

-- Quote of the Day --

I used to believe I was going in the wrong direction sometimes… it is important to accept my life experiences and learn from them… accept your personal accountability for what happens and move on. …Instead of worrying about the fairness of it all we must learn to be a river – go with the flow. …We all have an invisible bucket – and that is a great way to picture our feelings. When our bucket is full we are having positive feelings joyful, happy, …grateful. When our buckets are empty we might be sad or angry or jealous or any of these negative feelings. We can choose to be a bucket filler or a bucket dipper. A bucket filler helps make other people feel good by the things we do and say; a bucket dipper does just the opposite. The best way to keep our bucket full, is to fill other people’s buckets. …we are in charge of our buckets, all the time.”

Stacey Lundgren ~ June 24, 2010

Today's quote came from an interview with Stacey on the Conscious Discussions radio show that aired back on June 24 re: Creating a Fulfilling Life

* Click on the hyper-linked show title above to hear this interview or click on the radio title above to find all of our archived  and upcoming episodes.

-- Chatter --

Speaking of bucket filling... Dave and I just spent a few days refilling our own buckets after some intense weeks of very thick schedules. We have re-opened the closed doors to our office and feel quite refreshed after our time away. Actually, I opened the doors yesterday to the office - but didn't have a chance to weed through the hundreds of emails and make it to the blog as well. Anyway, I'd like to thank all of our readers here and listeners of the Conscious Discussions radio show as well, for your patience while we took some much-needed time to fill our buckets. :)

Dave has completed the basic design and most of the layout, buttons etc for the newly designed website. Same address of course: www.brummet.ca  - We will be making more changes over the next week; mostly additions of updated photos, tweaking of text here and there, and affiliate and ClickBank links for our published works. We are also just around the corner from releasing Trash Talk - It's Easy Being Green e-book series... You can see that we have a section for our e-books and announcements on the site. Watch for the release of this series there over the next week or so.

Also, you can expect to see the Brummet's Muse Newsletter soon; as it will be released on Sept 1st to all our subscribers. Not a subscriber? It is easy to sign up - look for the purple box on this blog or on our site www.brummet.ca  to sign up.

I wonder if our readers here had a chance to read a previous post on e-waste... I just published a comment that one of our readers had on that piece, where they offered a URL. I followed that URL to a fantastic article, and a discussion that followed the publication of that article - and highly recommend it. Do scroll down and check it out.

Also, I wanted to give applause to some great efforts that deserve celebrating:
Congratulations to the US, where their paper recycling industry has reached a record high of 63.4% recovery rate! That means that of the new paper purchased in the US, nearly 64% of it was recycled. Fantastic contributions to a greener planet by Americans. ☺

E-waste & Website News

-- Chatter --

Well, it is that time again - the doors to the office will be closed today, and will remain closed until Sunday. As many of you are already aware, Dave and I take 3-4 days off from the office every month - we do this for our own sanity. You see, a home office never goes away - it is there 24/7 and emails roll in every minute of the day. So for our own sanity and peace of mind, we have made a pact to each other to take this time away every month. I'll be sharing a lot of information today, in hopes that it will be enough content to satisfy our readers while we take this time away from the office :)

You'll find our site changes - www.brummet.ca - are nearly completed; we'll be able to do the final touch ups, affiliate info and a few new pages, and more in a few days... having it completely revamped and finished by Sept 1st, as promised. In the meantime, do scroll through the site to see what we've done with it so far. Check out Dave's Portfolio page that shows off some of his graphic and photo skills. We hope you like our new book cover images and the overall look of the new site.

-- Quote of the Day --

“…what a caregiver needs to do is to learn that they can accept help. It can be beneficial if the people around them say “I’m going to do this for you”. Too many times a caregiver will hear “Let me know, and I’ll be there…” And there are times when they think about picking up the phone but start thinking that maybe that person is too busy. It is up to everyone else to say “I’m going to come over for this hour and even if you are here, maybe I can wash the dishes or sweep the floor”. Then the caregiver will feel like they can call that person for help. …or come over; bring a movie. …People are often far more generous with new mothers – “Oh can I hold/feed the baby?”… But we can also offer things like “Can I help prepare lunch or supper for Mother?”… or allow the caregiver to take a break.

~ Jeff Schoener – June 8, 2010

-- Brummet's News --

:) I'm excited to let you know that Dave is currently finishing the final touches on our new website - a totally new design, but with the same address of course - He tells me the finished product should be available by Sept 1st... that is his personal deadline. It's hard, being that he has an injured right arm at the moment and is doing a lot of left hand stuff! :) However, I wanted to warn you so that in the meantime, as you visit the site over the next few days, you might see some pages aren't yet working or you might notice changes happening every day... Again, we plan on having the site changes completed by Sept 1st - with LOTS of new stuff, so do visit it often :) - www.brummet.ca

Sunday Do's Taking Up the Day

-- Chatter --

OK - I'm a little late in coming over to the blog today... I've been out harvesting blackberries, cabbage, potatoes, eggplant, artichoke and a few tomatoes as well... weeding in between all that. Once all the food was stored in the fridge and the kitchen relatively tidy, I headed right over here to spend some time with you on the blog. WHEW~! LOL

Later on I'll continue with the laundry, kitchen scouring and dog duties before heading back in the office to tackle the many emails sitting there for me to deal with :) ...and hopefully, I'll actually get some time to write this week. :)

Speaking of which... I'd like to invite you all to check out this great archived interview that I was listening to again recently, which the quote below was taken from:

-- Quote of the Day --

A query is essentially is a sales letter… in this case you are selling your creative work to a publisher, it is the first step to getting a contract. …Remember most query letters are rejected because the work is not suitable for that publication.  …Always remember that publications have submission specific guidelines. …Research is critical… Your query letter should be brief – Editors are incredibly busy, the query letter should be like a memo; no more than a page long. …if they ask for more information, this is where a book proposal comes in. …A book proposal is similar to a business plan... it explains why the publisher should invest in your work and should contain about 5 pages of content.

Writing & a Sustainable Global Society

-- Quote of the Day --

"Take out another notebook, pick up another pen,
and just write, just write, just write.
In the middle of the world, make one positive step.
In the centre of chaos, make one definitive act.
Just write. Say yes, stay alive, be awake.
Just write...
Just write...

Fuel News & Therapy

-- Quote of the Day --

“If you go in as a therapist without knowing a thing about {their situation}, but go in as an expert - what you are doing is converting them to your way of thinking, making them little “you’s” and the horror of that is they have to stay with you for the rest of their lives. …The real goal of therapy is to make yourself useless to the person, where they will no longer need you – because you are not {a therapist} for yourself. …Abuse is when someone takes away the power of another, often without that person being aware their power is taken away… or they give it away willingly... One person stealing power from another… There is a deception going on, the person is convincing the victim that their actions are for their own good. …they not only hide it, but when it comes to the kids they make excuses for it. …It often starts with a trained dependence on another. There are all kinds of abuse, but emotional abuse is the most prevailing.”

~ Milton Trachentenburg

Keeping waste oil in the recycling loop is a big concern, since only a small amount can wreak havoc on the environment. According to the EPA there are about 200 million gallons of used oil disposed of by pouring out on the ground, sending to the landfill or pouring down the drains. There are lots of collection sites available for people to choose from - including mechanics shops, or automobile parts/services and supply shops.  For those of us in BC we can go to www.usedoilrecycling.com/bc to find guidelines and collections sites.

There’s been a really interesting technological advancement for on-site recycling that was produced by Global Recuperation – this process is highly refined, much more efficient and includes advances like a reusable, self-cleaning filter.

Used oil is typically processed, cleaned and re-sold as a variety of lubricants and low-level fuel oils or used in the refining and petrochemical industries.

Ok, I know you are going to love this… I read in the April 2010 Recycling Product News mag – that Carbon Sciences Inc developed a “breakthrough technology to recycle carbon dioxide emissions into gasoline and other portable fuels”.  This really blows me away since it seems like science fiction in a way – but here it is, right there in front of us. It is amazing. Anyway…. They have created away for capturing flue gases via onsite unites and can be a major step towards sustainability.

The coca-cola company is apparently experimenting with numerous plastic beverage container alternatives from designing a bottle that is thin but strong (reducing plastic) to looking at “developing plant-derived bottles that are 100 % recyclable and  are currently experimenting with inedible parts of plants such as wheat  plant stems, scrap wood, and corn leaves and stalks."

Vending machines also will become more efficient from vacuum insulation panels and LED lighting to the use of a special earth friendly heat pump – they are expected to become 40% more efficient in the near future as well. Solar panels are also being experimented with for the vending machines.

One interesting aspect of vending machines is that some of them are being used to collect wildlife data – such as the ecological survey of the Okinawa Rail bird in Japan where the birdsong data collected from digital voice recorders installed on the vendor machines is used in studies.

Dental Health & Presentation Tips

-- Quote of the Day --

The quote I've chosen for today (below) originated from a Conscious Discussions Talk Radio show that aired back on May 27th, 2010 on How to Write and Speak like a Professional. You can find the archived show three different ways - the easiest is to simply click on the title above. Otherwise, visit the Conscious Discussions homepage and scroll through the archives listed there. Or you can visit our site ( www.brummet.ca ) to find a handy hyper-linked list of archived shows.

To me, the starting point is what you say (as opposed to stage presence) - unless you are going to be on stage strictly to be an entertainer, to make people laugh and smile than fine, the content isn’t important. But if you are trying to convince people about something …it doesn’t matter how good of an entertainer you are, you are not going to get your point across. …Stage presence, vocal variety, gestures, movements, and all that are there to emphasize the key ideas of what you are saying. …Producing copy is a tricky thing, too – more often than not people are writing for themselves. What you have to do is write copy in such a way that the reader decides for him/herself that it is important.”
~   Philip Yaffe - May 27, 2010

 -- Dental Awareness Month --

Did you know that August is  Dental Awareness Month? This awareness holiday began with just one week of awareness activities and grew to a global celebration for a full month. Topics and themes vary from year to year, but can include dental health for the elderly, infants and new technology and information from the industry.

According to AustinVetCare.com: "The #1 diagnosed condition in companion animals is periodontal disease - Bad Breath is not normal, take your pet's bad breath seriously and schedule a dental appointment."

We have the great fortune of having a wonderful, warm hearted vet to care for our companions - Carol Schulz. Her office made us aware of teeth brushing for dogs - at first it was really interesting to try and get a toothbrush in their mouths, especially since their toothpaste tastes like chicken or turkey and is too nummy to not lick, and lick, and lick... making the job more difficult. However, as time went on we found they became used to the idea. We made sure to let them see us brush our teeth and floss and so on so that they were accustomed to the ritual for this family group. I'm not sure if that really helped or not, however when Dave brushed their teeth recently he told me this great story.

Dave was brushing his own teeth when the dogs approached him with a body language. "It was as if they were asking for their teeth to be brushed" he said. Admittadly it had been a while since we took care of the dogs' teeth, at least 6 weeks... so Dave started brushing their teeth and said that both dogs waited patiently for their turn, took great interest in what was going on and our oldest dog - Onyx - actually lifted his lips for Dave to gain access.

So be patient when you first start with your dogs... Oh, and one tip - make sure the brush you choose is appropriate for a dog's mouth. The brush I received with the kit from the Vet's office was square, rigid and kinda big... a smaller one with a head that narrows, for easier access into the dog's mouth, is actually better for our dogs.

* source: www.JapanFS.org:

Back in 2001 it was determined that about 90% of Japans C02 emissions were generated from road transport, the Japanese transport sector had a lofty goal of cutting the Carbon Dioxide contributions from 267 to 243 million tons by 2010.

One might have the impression that the goal would be a difficult but attainable one for that time frame, especially with the increase in vehicle ownership and use  – however by 2007 they had already nearly achieved this goal, well ahead of schedule, with a decreased to 246 million tons of C02 emissions.

They did this by improving traffic flow thereby reducing idling, increasing vehicle efficiency (both on a manufacture level and also having the consumer use the vehicle more effectively, taxing older cars, etc), and reducing travel distances (urban planning).

World of Writing - Interviews

-- Quote of the Day --

I got some pretty harsh lessons from the kids… one inner city kids told a story about his father killing his dog. I was shocked, but thought perhaps he was vying for attention – but it turns out he wasn’t and I realized that there was violence in the home and I was concerned for him. And I asked him how he felt about that. …So I said, ‘Kids – look… You are living in a tough world. Very difficult things happen, but they are out of your control because you are kids. Here’s what you can do – you can say to a parent: ‘I feel bad when you do such-and-such to my dog or cat’. And you can say it maybe twice because the parents are in charge. But that can change, you can decide to be kind to animals when you grow up. …Kids can write stories about what is happening, how they feel when they are with animals. …{Pawprints Literacy Org} programs develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills – including drama – all of which are a part of literacy.”

~ Ina Hillebrandt; May 20, 2010
