Reducing Waste

-- Reducing Waste -- Here’s something we can all do to reduce the amount of “waste” we are contributing to the recycling and landfill systems by considering the reuse or repurpose potential of each item.  First, take a moment to jot down any local program, group, or class that may utilize "waste" items.  For instance: school art and sewing classes, kindergarten and preschool groups, daycares, youth groups, art and design programs at universities, sewing groups, or check out the the local recreation center and family centers… These places are often in need of items for their art projects.  We can support their efforts, helping extend their budgets by offering them our “waste”.  Everything from glass bottles and plastic containers, to cloth scraps and rags, egg cartons, coat hangers, magazines… buttons, bits and pieces of ribbon, wrapping paper, paper bags… and more. Business & Leadership Ethics

-- Quote of the Day -- "We find greatest joy, not in getting, but in expressing what we are...Men do not really live for honors or for pay; their gladness is not the taking and holding, but in doing, the striving, the building, the living. It is a higher joy to teach than to be taught. It is good to get justice, but better to do it; fun to have things but more to make them. The happy man is he who lives the life of love, not for the honors it may bring, but for the life itself."  ~ R. J. Baughan -- Businesses Making a Difference --  Yesterday we featured a discussion on how businesses can make a difference with their work, their purchasing habits and their actions in their community... I'd like to follow up on this by celebrating yet another business that cares about the planet and works very hard to make in-house decisions that affect us all in a positive way: Kudos to Zukes.com who has pr

Vehicle Recycling News

-- Quote of the Day -- "To see what is right, and not to do it, is want of courage or of principle."  ~ Lisa Alther  -- Positive Eco-News -- Kudos to Balfour Towing & Salvage & owner Eric Etelamaki  - a Kootenay towing company (BC, Canada) - that has stockpiled over 300 vehicles and is now processing them for recycling. On his own, he researched and came up with a fluid extraction system and crushing system – incorporating the SEDA fluid evacuation technology – using powerful pumps and barrels for proper storage of fluids like antifreeze and oil, removing and separating mercury switches, batteries, tires and more …which are then picked up by recycling companies. The last process is the crushing system that compacts the vehicle shells and then they are shipped to metal recyclers.  This inspiring example of a company going above and beyond, despite isolated location limitations, to make a

Eco-Advancements for Electronics

-- Quote of the Day -- " There is no calamity which a great nation can invite which equals that which follows a supine submission to wrong and injustice and the consequent loss of national self-respect and honor, beneath which are shielded and defended a people's safety and greatness ."  ~ Grover Cleveland -- Positive Eco-News in the Electronics Realm --  From Japan for Sustainability ( japanfs.org ) Fuji Xerox Co has developed a bio-mass plastic using inedible wood-derived and woody cellulose, a plastic that does not interrupt the food chain and utilizes waste from the food and forest industries that are difficult to compost. They are currently in the testing phases for the applications of the newly designed material. But they are saying that because the materials it is made from are so readily available – the new bio-plastic can be made anywhere and therefore can reduce fossil fuel and related

Electronics & Energy

-- Quote of the Day -- " Be fully in the moment, open yourself to the powerful energies dancing around you ."  ~ Ernest Miller Hemingway -- Electronics -- While drop-off depots for out-of-date or defunct electronics at recycling centers is a great option for the world – reuse is another.  There are many charities that collect working computers and peripherals (cables/wires, monitors, fax machines, keyboards, speakers, etc), which the volunteers and staff then clean up, clear their memory and upload proper programs for needy agencies like schools and non-profits, and low income families.  The Electronic Recycling Association ( ERA.ca ), the Vancouver Literacy Society ( vcls.ca ), Free Geek ( freegeekvancouver.org ), Empower Up ( empowerup.org )… and many, many others. Find a list of several other organizations @: http://earth911.com/recycling/electronics/computers/reuse-electron

Emotions & Pets

-- Quote of the Day --  " Bitterness imprisons life; love releases it. Bitterness paralyzes life; love empowers it. Bitterness sours life; love sweetens it. Bitterness sickens life; love heals it. Bitterness blinds life; love anoints its eyes ."  ~ Harry Emerson Fosdick -- Conscious Discussions Talk Radio -- Patsy Henry has a passion for bunnies, not the stewing kind – but the ones we love to cuddle. She received her first furry friend one Easter as a gift from her husband, and since then their brood has grown. As she learned how to take care of the bunnies, Patsy took lots of photos and made notes about things that happened.   She found it such a joy to watch her pet rabbits run and play, and today she shares that joy with others through her children's books. Join us today to learn about ethical treatment of pets like these, interesting bunny habits and more. http://ww
