Kudos to Balfour Towing
& Salvage & owner Eric Etelamaki - a Kootenay towing company (BC, Canada) -
that has stockpiled over 300 vehicles and is now processing them for recycling.
On his own, he researched and came up with a fluid extraction system and
crushing system – incorporating the SEDA fluid evacuation technology – using
powerful pumps and barrels for proper storage of fluids like antifreeze and
oil, removing and separating mercury switches, batteries, tires and more …which
are then picked up by recycling companies. The last process is the crushing
system that compacts the vehicle shells and then they are shipped to metal
recyclers.
This inspiring example of
a company going above and beyond, despite isolated location limitations, to
make a positive impact on the environment.

Mazda is also leading the
way in the vehicle industry in recycling bumpers from scrap vehicles – using
them to create new bumpers for a line of min-vans known as “Biante”.

Congratulations on mentioning this fine example of vehicle recycling. It is very important if we want to preserve our planet’s long-term sustainability to recycle as many things as we can. Cars and vehicles in general contain a whole range of toxic substances like mercury as you said in your post, and it is extremely important to control the safe storage and recycling of those substances, after cars have been dismantled.
ReplyDeleteI think it’s not only CO2 that creates problems, because there are more serious and severe types of environmental pollution and it is top priority to control them. In the end of the day, there is also some profit to be made out of it.
