Referral Corner

-- Quote of the Day --

"I have been studying the traits and dispositions of the "lower animals" (so called) and contrasting them with the traits and dispositions of man. I find the result humiliating to me."

~ Mark Twain

Reducing Waste

-- Reducing Waste --

Here’s something we can all do to reduce the amount of “waste” we are contributing to the recycling and landfill systems by considering the reuse or repurpose potential of each item.

First, take a moment to jot down any local program, group, or class that may utilize "waste" items.

For instance: school art and sewing classes, kindergarten and preschool groups, daycares, youth groups, art and design programs at universities, sewing groups, or check out the the local recreation center and family centers… These places are often in need of items for their art projects.

We can support their efforts, helping extend their budgets by offering them our “waste”.

Everything from glass bottles and plastic containers, to cloth scraps and rags, egg cartons, coat hangers, magazines… buttons, bits and pieces of ribbon, wrapping paper, paper bags… and more.

Simply go online and using your favorite search engine type in the keywords: “Creative Material Exchange” for your area.

I did a general search online and found pages of resources to check out including these I’ve listed here below:

Business & Leadership Ethics

-- Quote of the Day --

"We find greatest joy, not in getting, but in expressing what we are...Men do not really live for honors or for pay; their gladness is not the taking and holding, but in doing, the striving, the building, the living. It is a higher joy to teach than to be taught. It is good to get justice, but better to do it; fun to have things but more to make them. The happy man is he who lives the life of love, not for the honors it may bring, but for the life itself."

~ R. J. Baughan

-- Businesses Making a Difference --

Yesterday we featured a discussion on how businesses can make a difference with their work, their purchasing habits and their actions in their community... I'd like to follow up on this by celebrating yet another business that cares about the planet and works very hard to make in-house decisions that affect us all in a positive way:

Kudos to Zukes.com who has produced a healthy dog treat that is made with 100% Wind Power and the packaging itself is created out of 100% recycled paperboard, but is also reduced in size and filled with more treats so that there is about 20% less packaging per box than their competitors. They also have an in-house program where they pay their employees to “leave the car at home and ride their bikes or scooters to work instead. Their offices too are powered by 100% green electricity and to top it off they also donate to the dccfund.org; which works with animals with cancers. This organization is yet another hero to celebrate - as they work directly with vets to help needy families get the necessary treatment for pets suffering from cancer, they also offer grants to help scientists conduct research, and they promote prevention via education programs.

Conscious Businesses, Making a Difference

-- Quote of the Day --
"I'm slowly becoming a convert to the principle that you can't motivate people to do things, you can only demotivate them. The primary job of the manager is not to empower but to remove obstacles."

~ Scott Adams

Vehicle Recycling News

-- Quote of the Day --

"To see what is right, and not to do it, is want of courage or of principle."

~ Lisa Alther

 -- Positive Eco-News --

Kudos to Balfour Towing & Salvage & owner Eric Etelamaki  - a Kootenay towing company (BC, Canada) - that has stockpiled over 300 vehicles and is now processing them for recycling. On his own, he researched and came up with a fluid extraction system and crushing system – incorporating the SEDA fluid evacuation technology – using powerful pumps and barrels for proper storage of fluids like antifreeze and oil, removing and separating mercury switches, batteries, tires and more …which are then picked up by recycling companies. The last process is the crushing system that compacts the vehicle shells and then they are shipped to metal recyclers.

This inspiring example of a company going above and beyond, despite isolated location limitations, to make a positive impact on the environment.  * a note of appreciation to the Recycling Product Newsletter for writing an article about this company!

Mazda is also leading the way in the vehicle industry in recycling bumpers from scrap vehicles – using them to create new bumpers for a line of min-vans known as “Biante”.

Eco-Advancements for Electronics

-- Quote of the Day --

"There is no calamity which a great nation can invite which equals that which follows a supine submission to wrong and injustice and the consequent loss of national self-respect and honor, beneath which are shielded and defended a people's safety and greatness."

~ Grover Cleveland

-- Positive Eco-News in the Electronics Realm --

From Japan for Sustainability (japanfs.org) Fuji Xerox Co has developed a bio-mass plastic using inedible wood-derived and woody cellulose, a plastic that does not interrupt the food chain and utilizes waste from the food and forest industries that are difficult to compost. They are currently in the testing phases for the applications of the newly designed material. But they are saying that because the materials it is made from are so readily available – the new bio-plastic can be made anywhere and therefore can reduce fossil fuel and related emissions from transport.

According to the Recycling Product Newsletter (http://rpn.baumpub.com), Xerox Canada has designed a new program that allows consumers to recycle spent imaging supplies – Xerox is seen as a leader in the industry for sustainability and recycling programs for more than a decade – averaging 5.5 million kilograms of recyclable waste per year. This new program is expected to divert as much as 673 thousand additional kilograms of waste from landfills.

World of Writing

-- World of Writing, Interview --

It is time for another World of Writing interview - this time we have the Egyptian writer who writes in English, Wael El-Manzalawy. He has published 6 e books; his latest being: 150 Quotes About Success And Life
Find out more at:

Q: Where are you from?

Wael: I’m from Egypt. Egypt is a wonderful country, but we suffered from the ruling of the tyrants for many years. The Egyptian Revolution is the best event in my life. But, we have to do our best to get rid of the remains of the tyrants.

Q: What is your profession and educational backgrounds?

Wael: I’m graduated from the English Department of the Faculty of Arts. I have a diploma from the Faculty of Education. I’m graduated from an institute for preparing Islamic scholars.

Q: What is your mission?

Wael: My mission is the New Islamic Civilization. Many previous Islamic politicians won their popularity through clash with the west. But my project is the New Islamic Civilization based on the spiritual Islamic principles and the scientific Western Civilization. The earlier Islamic Civilization respected the scientific Greek, Roman, Persian and Indian Civilizations and I respect the scientific Western Civilization. But I believe that the spiritual Islamic principles are the only way to true happiness and internal peace.

Q: What was your path to publication?

Wael: I started publishing my articles by submitting them to some websites. Fortunately, many other websites republished them. The readers of my articles are about 250,000 – 300,000. Another important step was publishing my e-books. The readers of my e-books in less than two years are about 40,000.

Q: What is the wisest thing anyone has said to you?

Wael:You may have to fight a battle more than once to win it.” –Margaret Thatcher
...and:
Many of life’s failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success when they gave up.” –Thomas Edison

Q: What is the important role that writers play in today’s world?

Wael: All the achievements of the world of reality start in the world of imagination. So, writers and thinkers are essential for changing the world. Many persons deal with the present only. But the writers and thinkers deal with the past and the present in order to imagine the future. But certainly, the thinkers need many persons to convert their imagination to truth.

"We can become anything. That is why injustice is impossible here.
There may be the accident of birth; there is no accident of death.
Nothing forces us to remain what we were."

Electronics & Energy

-- Quote of the Day --

"Be fully in the moment, open yourself to
the powerful energies dancing around you."

~ Ernest Miller Hemingway

-- Electronics --

While drop-off depots for out-of-date or defunct electronics at recycling centers is a great option for the world – reuse is another.

There are many charities that collect working computers and peripherals (cables/wires, monitors, fax machines, keyboards, speakers, etc), which the volunteers and staff then clean up, clear their memory and upload proper programs for needy agencies like schools and non-profits, and low income families.

The Electronic Recycling Association (ERA.ca), the Vancouver Literacy Society (vcls.ca), Free Geek (freegeekvancouver.org), Empower Up (empowerup.org)… and many, many others.

Find a list of several other organizations @:

Or do an Internet search on your favorite browser using keywords like: your region/city - computer reuse - electronics donation sites.

Emotions & Pets

-- Quote of the Day --

"Bitterness imprisons life; love releases it. Bitterness paralyzes life; love empowers it. Bitterness sours life; love sweetens it. Bitterness sickens life; love heals it. Bitterness blinds life; love anoints its eyes."

~ Harry Emerson Fosdick

Patsy Henry has a passion for bunnies, not the stewing kind – but the ones we love to cuddle. She received her first furry friend one Easter as a gift from her husband, and since then their brood has grown. As she learned how to take care of the bunnies, Patsy took lots of photos and made notes about things that happened.  She found it such a joy to watch her pet rabbits run and play, and today she shares that joy with others through her children's books. Join us today to learn about ethical treatment of pets like these, interesting bunny habits and more.
