Of Plastic and Business

-- Note: --

I am taking the day off from hosting the radio show, I need some time to just relax today.

-- Positive News --
I'm a big fan of bringing beverages with me whenever I leave the house - typically water in a stainless steel reusable bottle, but I've a half a cupboard filled with other types of bottles that I reuse regularly including a few old juice bottles. We also have a couple old water bottles in the back of the Jeep that I keep filled with purified water for either the dogs or a vehicle emergency. I've taken water, juice, ice tea and warm drinks in the winter on trips, hike, walking the dogs or even to the garden. I take them when we go shopping or when I have an appointment in town. This way I am less likely to purchase refreshments, saving money and reducing the amount of waste I produce.

Still, despite these efforts, occasionally we'll have a pop bottle or someone visits and leaves a bottle, or we'll pick litter up and inevitably there's a batch of bottles there too. It is important to recycle these.

Did you know that (according to the EPA), containers made from recycled plastic only uses 2/3 of the energy that new bottle manufacturing consumes? Luckily people are getting on board with recycling, in fact the National Association for PET Container Resources reports that plastic bottles were the most commonly recycled material by 2010 - however only 29% of the bottles produced are actually recycled. So there is a lot of growth needed in the recycling of these bottles.

Reduce, reuse, recycle: These are the best ways of dealing with the vast number of plastic bottles that are consumed in today's world.
