Product Review

-- Product Review --

I am a big fan of essential oils, so when Lusine Grigoryan of Elaia Beauty LLC (based in Hollandale Beach, Florida - USA) connected with me about reviewing their product I was thrilled. We arranged for me to review their argan, rosehip and jojoba oil products around July 3rd; the product arrived sometime after or around July 7th I'm not sure of the exact date, however it was there for us when Dave visited the US postal service on his next trip which was July 11th.

The products arrived in appropriately sized brown paperboard boxes that had no additional inks, printing or labeling other than a small identification and bar code label on one side. The boxes easily collapsed for compact recycling. Each box included a single sheet of paper printed on one side (non gloss paper) with additional information about the oil in each box. This impressed me because the packaging is great for the environment, is easily recycled (or composted) and keeps the costs down for everyone involved. The oils were in brown glass bottles, with simple beige and burgundy colored labels, rubber topped droppers with plastic screw top lid and plastic safety seal around the top, which wasn’t serrated so I had to cut it off with a razor knife.

All of Elaia Beauty oils are certified organic via EcoCert IC0, there are no fillers or synthetics and none of their products have been tested on animals. Each bottle that I received had a small Use By sticker on the bottom of the bottle – mine stated 12/17, which I assume to mean December 2017. That is 2.5 years from now – however once opened it has a 12 month shelf life. Each of the three listed here can be applied topically to face, hair, skin and nails.

Rosehip oil (1 fl. oz. / 30 ml):

This cold-pressed is packed Omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids, vitamin C, vitamin A, and beta-carotene. Rosehip oil is most often used in anti-aging masks and creams and for healing skin for an array of problems. I have found, however, that it does irritate existing eczema so be careful about that.

Apply 2-3 drops onto fingertips and apply onto dry skin, hair, scalp or other external area. I found it useful for healing dry, frizzy hair and dealing with dandruff by adding 6 drops into my refillable bottle of organic conditioner. Rosehip oil can reportedly reduce the appearance of scars and stretch marks.

Instructions are: keep refrigerated and out of reach of children. Use for external applications only - do not ingest.

The rosehip oil is imported from Chili, bottled in small batches (in order to control freshness) in the US and distributed by Elaia Beauty LLC.

List price on Amazon.com is $34.99, but is currently on sale for $14.99(US)

Jojoba oil (4 fl. oz. / 120 ml.):

I’ve heard of jojoba oil – mostly in commercials for hair products, but have not experienced this oil myself until now. As such I was particularly grateful to have the additional information included in the box.

Elaia’s jojoba oil is cold-pressed and unrefined. It is derived from the seed of the jojoba shrub (Simmondsia chineses). This oil is rich in fatty acids, antioxidants, and an array of vitamins and minerals that are particularly beneficial to hair, nails, and skin. The oil also has the potential to imitate skin sebum (an oily secretion by the sebaceous glands meant to protect your skin from losing or absorbing too much water, bacteria and fungi – too little and you’ll have dry, cracking skin; too much can lead to acne). The only place your body doesn’t naturally produce sebum is in the palms of your hands and bottoms of your feet.  The exact composition of sebum varies with age, and we produce less sebum as we age – thus the reason behind older people being more prone to dry skin).

Jojoba is also non-comedongenic – meaning: doesn’t clog pores or lead to pimples. It can break down the excess oils on your skin, but can also moisturize the skin and add nutrients at the same time. The oil doesn’t irritate sensitive skin and is non-allergenic. It has anti-fungal and anti-inflammatory properties as well.

The oil absorbs quickly, is odorless and is totally free of chemicals or preservatives.

Apply directly onto clean, dry skin – but wipe off excess. Add a few drops of the oil into the palm of your hands and rub into the ends of your hair. Or use as a natural make up remover. Alternatively add some of the oil to your organic face and skin moisturizers and hair conditioners (I put 6 drops each of argan, jojoba and rosehip in my bottle). Place a little oil on your lips as a lip balm to heal dry skin and sores.

Instructions are: Keep out of reach of children, for external use only - do not ingest, and store in a cool, dark place.

List price on Amazon is $34.99 but is currently on sale for $16.95 (US)

Argan oil (2 fl. oz. / 60 ml.)

The argan oil (argania spinosa kernel oil) bottle label was much easier to read than the other two oils I received from this company (jojoba and argan), which had slightly faded font.

Argan oil is derived from the nut produced by argan trees, native to Morocco – thus the slight nutty smell; people with nut allergies may want to avoid this oil. It is very rich in essential fatty acids, proteins and vitamin E. Elaia’s argan oil is cold-pressed, unrefined, not roasted, has no chemicals or artificial fragrances and is non-deodorized (some oils are run through charcoal filters).

Argan is known mainly as a moisturizer used to protect and strengthen skin, hair nails and feet. Try adding a few drops to massage oils, hair conditioner and skin creams. Apply 2-3 drops onto fingertips and apply directly to dry skin, hair, scalp or other area of the body. Add to your organic face cream, or if you have dry skin apply a few drops directly. I can certainly attest that it is particularly useful when applied to cuticles, feet and nails for preventing peeling, splitting and cracking.  Has great potential as a hair detangler – try adding 6-7 drops in a mister with some water for a home made detangler.

Instructions are: Do not ingest; for external use only. Keep out of reach of children, and store in a cool, dark place.

List price $41.99, currently on sale for $13.99 (US) on Amazon.com

In closing:

I have a mister sprayer of organic leave in conditioner that is almost empty. I’m thinking of using purified water (from our reverse osmosis machine) and adding some argan, rosehip and jojoba oils to it, as a leave in detangler-conditioner.  I also added 6-7 drops of each oil to my organic hair conditioner with great success.

Sadly none of their products are available on Amazon.ca. At the time of the creation of this review the company website, ElaiaBeauty.com, consisted of only a basic home page – however I was forewarned that it was under construction.
